Recommended Annual Lawn Care Maintenance Calendar

 

January

  • Spray any visible weeds with a post-emergent herbicide
  • Cut back any Liriope and ornamental grasses as needed
  • Prune shrubs that need shaping, and to remove winters overgrowth
  • Dead head annuals
  • Remove any of last years vines (above ground)

February

  • Continue with post-emergent herbicide as needed on stubborn weeds
  • Apply pre-emergent to St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns
  • Prune both Crape Myrtles and Roses
  • Perform initial spring maintenance (mow, blow, weed eat & edge), to remove winter overgrowth and clean up the landscape appearance

March

  • Apply spring fertilizer for trees and shrubs as necessary
  • Resume regular mowing schedule - scalping of warm season turf grass (Bermuda/St. Augustine) after March 15th (typical last frost date in E. Texas)
  • Continue with post-emergent weed control, as needed
  • Evaluate irrigation system (verify working order; review watering schedule; recommend updates/changes)
  • Perform annual soil test to determine best recommendations for fertilizer application

 

April

  • Apply second application of pre-emergent with fertilizer to St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns
  • Apply first early season fertilizer to St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns after second mowing (typically a 15-5-10 fertilizer)
  • Prune new growth on shrubs
  • Resume weekly maintenance schedule for all types of turf grass (mowing height adjusted to stimulate healthy growth of warm season turfgrass)
  • Change out annuals for spring and summer

 

May

  • Prune shrubs and trees (below 7' in height) that need shaping or have excess/uncontrolled growth
  • Monitor turf and beds for insects/ants (make recommendations as needed for insect control)
  • Continue full maintenance

 

June

  • Inspect turf and shrubs for signs of disease or insect damage. Recommend improvements, as needed.
  • Apply slow release fertilizer for warm season turf grass (St. Augustine, Bermuda) based upon soil test results done in March - as needed
  • Prune shrubs as warranted
  • Continue full maintenance

 

July

  • Deadhead annuals
  • Continue with post-emergent weed control, as needed
  • Apply fungicides as required
  • Continue full maintenance

 

August

  • Apply fertilizer for turf and shrubs, as needed
  • Prune shrubs as warranted
  • Continue full maintenance
  • Inspect lawns for signs of Brown Patch (typically occurs in late Summer), and recommendation treatment as necessary

 

September

  • Evaluate lawn for aeration needs. Recommend improvements/changes prior to fall/winter period
  • Deadhead annuals
  • Continue full maintenance
  • Apply late season turf grass fertilizer (final application), prior to fall

October

  • Apply final fertilizer application , 30 days prior to first frost (typically Dec. 1 in the Tyler area)
  • Apply fall pre-emergent to St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns, to attack those germinating winter seeds
  • Change out annuals for winter
  • Continue full maintenance (reduce weekly mowing to every other week)
  • Perform early fall leaf cleanup (late October/early November)

 

November

  • Continue full maintenance (reduce weekly mowing to as needed basis - typically once or twice in November)
  • Perform 2nd. fall leaf cleanup (mid-to-late November)
  • Make recommendations on winter irrigation of  lawns, so they do not dry out over the winter

 

December

  • Perform 3rd. fall leaf cleanup (early-to-mid December)
  • Prune shrubs as warranted
  • Reduce mowing to once a month, for clean up and trim purposes only
